病院で血液検査をしてもらったら、腎臓関係の数値が、測定する機械の上限を振り切った。腎臓がもうぜんぜん機能していないほどの重症だという。歯だけの問題だと思っていたら、手遅れの腎不全。毒素とかを分解するはずの腎臓が機能していないから、身体に残った毒があちこちをむしばんでいく一方だそうだ。あとはもう、できることは、点滴や注射での延命処置だけ。
点滴をしてもらって病院に預かってもらうことにして、帰った。おばあちゃんのことに加えて、メメの延命処置をし続けるのは無理。メメもあとはもう苦しくなっていくだけだ。相談した結果、おばあちゃんに一度会わせてあげて、そのあと病院で安楽死させてもらうことになった。
おかんやおばちゃんの悲しみは深い。このことは、一番メメとの関わりが少ない僕が担う。
